Once an important Roman capital, Tarragona’s wealth of antiquities has seen the Catalonia city crowned a UNESCO World Heritage site. There’s the standout waterfront 2nd-century amphitheatre and a well-preserved Roman circus. But wander the charming narrow, cobblestone streets and cafe-lined squares and you’ll stumble upon more beautiful ruins – ancient forum walls and soaring columns – layered amidst modern city life. Outside the city ramparts, take time to pilgrim 4km north and walk across the glorious two-tier Ferres Aqueduct built by Emperor Augustus and if visiting in October, witness a Tarragona tradition at the city’s annual castells competition, where teams from across the country gather in the old bullring to create human towers between six and ten tiers high.
