Escape into
off-the-charts tranquillity in La Romana, a hidden gem exuding an élan that is
cosmopolitan and tropical. Find
a bit of Rome in Altos de Chavón, a
replica of a 16th-century Tuscan village brimming with studios for fashion and art, and a
5,000-seat limestone amphitheater. Encamp in Casa de Campo, a regal resort
oasis on the radar
of royalty and celebrities seeking best-of-the-best golf, dining, and polo. Divers
delight swimming in shades of aquamarine and amethyst from Bayahibe Beach or whilst
naturalist heed the call of Cotubanamá
National Park for dolphin, manatees, and birds of a thousand colours.
Day 5, San Juan, Puerto RicoArrival 09:00Departure 18:00
Explore the oldest US city for a dose of Caribbean history, slice of Spanish culture and twist of American dream. Roam historic Old San Juan alleyways to glimpse centuries-old forts and colourful colonial buildings. Learn how to move, as locals sashay out the salsa to rhythmic reggae beats. Shop the boho streets or glamorous boutiques for artisan goods, decadent designers and hand-rolled cigars. Experience world-class surfing, explore a tropical rainforest, attend a private rum cocktail tasting and polish off empanadas. Then retire to one of the beautiful beaches to soak up crystal clear waters and, perhaps, one last rum cocktail.
Day 6, Basseterre, Saint Kitts and NevisArrival 09:00Departure 19:00
Formed by volcanoes, St Kitts fertile soil is so rich it turns monkeys green. Trek through miles of rainforest amongst colourful wildlife to conquer the highest peak of Mount Liamuiga so you can peer into the mile-wide crater, or bravely descend to sniff the sulphur. Experience a train ride, sailing trip, cooking class, sky safari zip-line, or creative batik fabric workshops. Visit sugarcane plantations, the Narrows between St Kitts and Nevis and the UNESCO Brimstone Hill Fortress for spectacular views of neighbouring islands. You’ll find this special island small in size yet tall in standing, as well as big on charm.
Day 7, Les Trois-Îlets, MartiniqueArrival 09:00Departure 19:00
We say “oui!” to Les Trois-Îlets, a shore-hugging town on mountainous Martinque with all the
sunshine of Saint-Tropez. This simple French outpost unfurls with views of
Mont Peel volcano across the waters of Fort-de-France Bay. Beautiful birthplace
of Napoleon’s bride, Empress Josephine, whose childhood home, Pagerie, now welcomes
as a lovely museum. Effortless and unpretentious, simple water pleasures abound
at Grande Anse d’Arlet, and the black-sand Anse Noir. Mentions of “merci” drift
through covered markets, the buzzy marina at Pointe du Bout and bistros serving
rouge langoustine and crisp rosé.
Day 8, Bequia, Saint Vincent and the GrenadinesArrival 08:00Departure 18:00
Summon your inner Robinson Crusoe on remote Bequia. Secret lagoons. Castaway picnics. Warm waters in shades of blue that beg to be snorkelled through. Stake your flag in the sweet Bequia breeze just as the Union Jack did for almost 200 years. Usher in deep tranquillity on lovely Princess Margaret Beach. Ascend Mount Peggy with sunny views of St. Vincent. Stoll Belmont Boardwalk to Margret Beach for hand-whittled mahogany boat models then prowl the concrete catwalk that runs along Port Elizabeth for home-churned nutmeg ice cream. Support a sterling turtle sanctuary protecting the rare hawksbill or ferry to nearby Mustique, the favourite holiday romp for Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Day 9, Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the GrenadinesArrival 08:00Departure 19:00
Wander into the quiet laid-back charm of historical St Vincent. Explore Fort Charlotte, the ancient Botanic Gardens - sanctuary to the endangered Amazon parrot - and hike the lush Vermont Valley for views of banana farms and rainforests. Feel the wind in your sails aboard a schooner or dip in to race seahorses, spot barracuda and admire leaping sea frogs. Watch welcoming Vincentians gently fry jackfruit and lace fruit punch with rum in this sultry tropical wonderland. And with such a backdrop, it’s easy to understand why The Pirates of the Caribbean movie was shot here.
Day 10, Bridgetown, BarbadosArrival 08:00Departure 20:00
Gently breeze into the vibrant capital of Barbados. Steeped in fascinating history, with architecture to match, uncover the wonderfully laid-back West Indian ambiance. Embrace the slow Bajan rhythm of this welcoming island; surf, snorkel and try spotting turtles in balmy azure waters. Explore subterranean Harrison’s Cave, Jacobean St Nicholas Abbey and zipline high above bountiful tropical flora. Then return to restore on pastel pink sands at palm-studded beaches, where you’ll discover cocktail hour is endless, and measures of rum are copious.
Day 11, Scarborough (Tobago), Trinidad and TobagoArrival 08:00Departure 17:00
Traces of British influence abound on the island of Tobago, sibling to big brother Trinidad. Pocket-sized Scarborough, a Caribbean jewel crowned by the 18th century remains of Fort King George, bears little resemblance to its Yorkshire namesake. The Beatles and Rita Hayworth have padded barefoot along Bacolet Bay Beach, a palm-fringed crescent of golden sand below hillside mansions. Beyond the city, echoes of Scottish ancestors are evident at the 54-metre Argyle Waterfall and Atlantic-facing Speyside, the gateway to the seabird sanctuary of Little Tobago — Bird of Paradise Island. Visit the bioluminescent waters of Buccoo Reef Marine Park and stroll the feather-soft sands of Pigeon Point.
Day 12, Fort-de-France, MartiniqueArrival 09:00Departure 19:00
Follow the French flag waving over the hulking fortress that gave the city its name then dive into the island’s Afro-French-West Indies culture. Green is the island’s colour for sustainability, spicy is its flavour, and Creole is its soul. This “island of flowers” lives up to her name as one of the world’s 35 biodiversity hotspots. Hike beside waterfalls, ponder the flying buttresses at Cathédrale St-Louis, and savour cocoa farms, local rum, and artisan sorbet in the shade of one of the island’s enchanting gardens.
Day 13, St. John's (Antigua), Antigua and BarbudaArrival 08:00Departure 20:00
An adrenaline rush awaits. Swim with stingrays. Zip-line through lush forests. Walk across a gorge on a scenic suspension bridge. Sip excellent aged rums. Taste the island with a chef. Or stroll St. John's old town to tour cottages laden with cheerful fretwork. Explore British forts atop Shirley Heights and Goat Hill. Then rest and rejuvenate at one of the snow-white beaches.
Day 14, Philipsburg , Sint MarteenArrival 12:00Departure 20:00
Princely Philipsburg reigns as the
capital of the Dutch side of the dual-nation island of Sint Maarten/ and French
Saint Martin. Lounging beside aptly named Great Bay, the seaside city weaves
colourful streets lined with Dutch emporiums brimming with chocolates, cheeses
and coveted luxuries. Kayak lapis-blue waters, dive amongst a kaleidoscope of
reefs or gallop on horseback along shaded plantation trails. Play ‘lady luck’ in
winning casinos or a round of golf beside an eternally blue sea. Every moment
embraces the idea that a day in Philipsburg is royal.
Day 15, Road Town (Tortola), British Virgin IslandsArrival 08:00Departure 18:00
A tropical utopia with soaring peaks for climbing, waves for surfing, wrecks for snorkelling, and cocktails with locally sourced rum. All around Road Town, the capital of the British Virgin Islands, are streets lined with brightly coloured buildings built during the days of colonial Dutch and British rule. Check out Pusser’s Painkiller Bar for a namesake punch before venturing into the humid embrace of the high-canopied forest of Sage Mountain. Beyond are adventures at every turn; zip-line through treetops; dive coral-laden lagoons, explore jungles with 4x4’s, or lounge on countless postcard-perfect beaches. And, since this is the so-called “sailing capital of the Caribbean,” don’t miss catching a catamaran navigating to a scattering of uninhabited islands.
